Who We Are

The Georgetown International Academy (GIA), formerly known as the Georgetown American School, was founded in 1971 to serve the needs of the US Embassy post in Guyana, and continues to be one of 193  “American Overseas Schools” assisted by the U.S. Department of State.

At GIA, we are also fully committed to positive approaches to discipline that focus on personal responsibility, encouragement, and consequences rather than corporal punishment or other negative practices. We are a Tribes™ learning community.   To learn more about Tribes™, please visit https://tribes.com

The Georgetown International Academy is a private, coeducational day school that offers an educational program compatible with the United States system for Nursery through Grade 12. The School has been in operation since September 1, 1971. The school year consists of two semesters extending approximately from the middle of August to the middle of December, and from the beginning of January to the middle of June. Our language of instruction is English with French and Spanish offered as foreign languages. Our school hours are from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM, with an 11:30 AM dismissal option for Nursery. There are also optional after-school activities scheduled from 2:50 PM to 4:00 PM. Parents provide transportation for their child(ren) to and from school. Students bring their own lunch or purchase from the school.

Governance: The School is governed by a School Board of seven (7) parent members, who are democratically elected by the parent stakeholder community. The School is incorporated in Guyana and operates within the laws of that country, but is fully accredited by COGNIA in the U.S.

Curriculum: The curriculum is reflective of that offered by U.S. elementary, middle and high schools, with additions intended to assist pupils in understanding Guyana and Caribbean geography and history. Textbooks are current and are from major educational publishers in the U.S. GIA is fully accredited by COGNIA, and the curriculum is augmented by educational technology resources. The School is also the official SAT examination center for Guyana.
