Our Educational Philosophy

The faculty provides appropriately rigorous Nursery through Grade12 curricula which enrich and support the needs and diversity of GIA’s culturally diverse student body. It is the role of the professional staff to provide students with wide ranging and appealing educational materials that encompass an appreciation and respect for different points of view. With our goal of continuous improvement, GIA’s faculty members participate in professional development workshops several times a year based on identified areas of need. The favorable student/teacher ratio utilized at GIA is conducive to individualized instruction, differentiation, flexibility, and the accommodation of mild to moderate special needs.

Our Curriculum

Georgetown International Academy follows a 180+ day school year schedule, beginning in August and ending in June. GIA offers a Nursery through Grade 12 U.S. accredited curriculum that is comparable to private, college preparatory schools in the U.S. and internationally. We utilize Common Core standards in the areas of English Language Arts and Mathematics and Next Generation Science standards. The curriculum at GIA is reviewed, implemented, revised, refined, and evaluated on a 5 year cycle to make sure that all are: up to date, meet US and international standards, support 21 st century learning, and are developmentally appropriate for age and grade level expectations. Continuous curricular reviews reinforce the alignment of our curriculum with those of similar academic institutions worldwide. The curriculum is made up of standards that are applied at all grade levels. Under each standard are grade level specific benchmarks and indicators that identify skills and knowledge that students should attain by the end of each grade. The curriculum is supported by teaching methodologies that create a student-centered learning environment that use inquiry based investigations, discussions, projects, demonstrations, modeling, role play, group work, interdisciplinary units and assignments. In addition to the core curriculum, GIA’s academic program is augmented by music, art, French, Spanish, and physical education. GIA’s curriculum is designed to take advantage of the unique educational opportunities provided by the school’s location in Guyana.

In addition to the core curriculum consisting of Mathematics, Writing, Reading, Science, and Social Studies GIA’s academic program is augmented by Music, Art, Physical Education, Spanish/French, and elective courses.
